Thomas R. Eng, VMD, MPH, is Founder and President of EvaluMetrix LLC. A nationally recognized expert in eHealth, Dr. Eng’s areas of expertise include the application of emerging technologies, especially the Internet, to health communication, health care, public health, evaluation, and research. He has directed the development of several innovative tools, including a next-generation health search engine, to help consumers locate relevant online resources and to help health care providers enhance patient education. He also uses his vast experience in health, technology, business, and government, to help organizations develop innovative technology strategies and programs. Dr. Eng has written and spoken extensively about eHealth development, quality and evaluation, and policy issues. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, books and book chapters, and abstracts on a wide range of health and technology issues, which have appeared in JAMA, the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and the British Medical Journal. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Washington; a judge and mentor for the Global Social Venture Competition; a judge for the Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition; a judge for the Siemens Westinghouse Science, Technology, and Math Competition; a member of the National Advisory Committee of the Health e-Technologies Initiative, and an advisor to other nonprofit and commercial eHealth ventures.

Dr. Eng is also Founder and President of the eHealth Institute, where he chairs the annual eHealth Developers' Summit, an innovative national forum for leading eHealth executives and funders. Dr. Eng's landmark works include The eHealth Landscape: A Terrain Map of Emerging Information and Communication Technologies in Health and Health Care, and Wired for Health and Well-Being: the Emergence of Interactive Health Communication. Before founding EvaluMetrix, Dr. Eng had an extensive health career, including positions with the Institute of Medicine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Peace Corps, Congressional Science Fellowship in the US Senate, and two state health departments. He has received numerous prestigious awards from the US Public Health Service, the International Society for Travel Medicine, and other organizations. He is an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University.

Marcos A. Athanasoulis, MPH, DrPH, is Chief Technology Officer for EvaluMetrix LLC and oversees development efforts in a technical capacity. Dr. Athanasoulis’ areas of expertise include the design and implementation of high volume health information systems, electronic disease surveillance systems, and the general application of information systems to health problems. He has been the principal architect behind Internet based hospital systems, consumer health information systems, health risk assessments and large-scale transactional systems to support healthcare. He is skilled in more than a dozen programming languages and has worked in a multitude of heterogeneous computing platforms. Special skills include data transformation and integration, system architecture and design and health information management. He has a unique blend of computer science experience and training combined with a breadth of public health experience and graduate training.

During his career, Dr. Athanasoulis has worked in both the public and private sector to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare through information systems. Most recently, Dr. Athanasoulis was the Vice President of Product Development at RelayHealth Corporation, Inc., where he oversaw the continuing development and implementation of an advanced patient-provider communication system. RelayHealth provides its secure, structured messaging systems to for patients of health plans such as Blue Shield of California and employees of large employers including Cisco, Cadence, Oracle, Apple and GE. As Chief Technology Officer at HealthCentral.com, he oversaw the development of health information systems for more than 100 hospitals and health plans. He also was the chief architect for a consumer health information system utilized by millions of consumers to gather health information and assess health risks. Prior to that he directed a team of engineers who implemented a health application for an interactive television trial under an Advanced Technology Program grant to the Dr. Koop Foundation, as well as developed components of advanced health object library architecture. Dr. Athanasoulis has consulted to a wide variety of health care organizations including, the California Department of Health Services, San Francisco General Hospital, Alta Bates Hospital, UC Berkeley Wellness Guide.
